David compared his desire to be in God's presence with a wild animal's thirst for water. His passion was to be with God and immersed in God's will.
As the deer pants for streams of water,
so my soul pants for you, my God.
My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.
When can I go and meet with God? (Psalm 42:1-2 NIV)
Last week when my father-in-law's surgery began, I yearned for a quiet place to regroup and to calm my nerves. I longed to be with God and to feel His reassuring presence. So I took a walk with my friend to a secret fountain at Presbyterian Hospital. Right there in the middle of the concrete desert of Dallas flowed this beautiful, calming waterfall - creating the perfect environment for prayer and reflection.
I walked past two chapels in that hospital to get to the waterfall. For some reason, this felt like a place where I could more authentically connect with God. The fountain is new enough that nobody really knows about it yet. So my friend and I had the whole area to ourselves. It was peaceful and perfect, my own personal En Gedi in the middle of the battle with cancer.
David sought refuge at En Gedi when Saul was pursuing him. En Gedi is and was and oasis of pure water flowing out of the mountain in the middle of the wilderness. The harsh desert is only a couple hundred feet in each direction of En Gedi. David and his men hid in the caves of the mountains surrounding En Gedi. Imagine how refreshed David and his men must have felt when then came upon that waterfall of clean, pure water that they could drink until they were completely hydrated....especially after days in the wilderness on the run! (Read I Samuel 23:7-24:22 for this story.)
In times of stress and uncertainty, I long for God. However, I want to create that thirst for Him in all circumstances. I want to become so dependent upon the Lord for my very existence that He is my air, my food, and my drink. The Lord's Presence in my life should be my sustenance in good times and bad because He is the building block of life.
You, God, are my God,
earnestly I seek you;
I thirst for you,
my whole being longs for you,
in a dry and parched land
where there is no water.
I have seen you in the sanctuary
and beheld your power and your glory.
Because your love is better than life,
my lips will glorify you.
I will praise you as long as I live,
and in your name I will lift up my hands.
I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods;
with singing lips my mouth will praise you. (Psalm 63:1-5 NIV)
As I read these words and examine my own heart, I must consider what my passion is. What drives me? What excites me? What makes my heart beat faster in anticipation? Is it the thrill of being with my Lord? Am I that excited to open my Bible and to be with Him in quiet time?
Oh Father, create in me a holy, passionate thirst for You!
